They serve to effectively bypass the egr system, mitigating the likelihood of engine problems such as uneven idling and diminished fuel efficiency.

Seems like by blocking off that EGR path, we're reducing engine stress and maybe even extending its lifespan. Plus, eliminating that EGR means one less thing to worry about during maintenance.
